AI Can Check Your Password in less than a Minute

AI Can Crack Your Password in Less than a Minute: Be Careful

Artificial Inelegance (AI) is not only making certain tasks automated and easier for humans but also becoming vulnerable if used for the wrong tasks.

In the Tech world password is one of the most important secret codes we use to keep our devices and data safe from unauthorized access.

But now as per the new report by Home Security Heroes, people who use common passwords can be also cracked by AI-enabled applications.

The report says 51% of commonly used passwords can be cracked in less than a minute. Think your password is smarter – An AI-based application developed and tested and reported that 81% of passwords can be cracked in less than a month.

What Kind of Passwords Are at Risk?

To arrive at this conclusion, Home Security Heroes used the AI password cracker PassGAN; running it through a list of 15,680,000 passwords.

Even without AI in the mix, your passwords are vulnerable if they’re straightforward and basic – only in lowercase, devoid of numbers and special characters, etc.

However, PassGAN was able to crack passwords with seven characters – yes, even ones containing symbols in less than six minutes.

The biggest security takeaway from this test is that AI takes a lot longer to crack passwords that have more characters and variety in terms of characters used.

Hence, it’s advisable to have longer, versatile passwords, with less predictable arrangements and words if you wish to keep them safe from such AI crackers in the near future.

While, if your password has 14 characters comprising upper and lower case letters, AI would take 187 million years on average to crack it, compare to a simple 7-character password that was cracked by PassGAN in less than 22 seconds.

How to Protect Your Passwords?

Keeping your password strong or complicated is very much important to keep safe from such misused apps. For starters, never use a commonly known word as your password – especially your name, birthday dates, mobile no, city, or locality name.

If you want to keep your password very strong, either type a combination of letters in upper as well as lower case along with special charterers and numbers and make it long as much as 15 characters.

Or you can use online password generators that can create strong random passwords like 04Bh&*Ar@tTt=53, for example, which would be a lot harder to crack for anyone including any AI-enabled application or hacker.

You can check how strong a random password is against AI tools on the Home Security Heroes website.
